Texas Fear Fest

Posted by Horror Grinder on December 29, 2007

March 7th, 8th, and 9th Texas Fear Fest will be helping to raise money and awareness for the West Memphis Three – three men who have been falsely imprisoned for murder since 1993. Recently completed DNA testing (not available back in 1993) does not match any of the three men, and their many supporters hope to see them freed in the near future. Tammy Adin (coordinator for the West Memphis Three World Awareness Day) and Anje Vela (president of Music4Life) will be teaming up with John Gray of Texas Fear Fest to bring donated items from Skeleton Key Auctions and other sources for a huge silent auction of memorabilia, artwork and many other items, to raise money for the West Memphis Three’s legal defense fund.

Texas Fear Fest is a horror-oriented for-profit media event held annually in the Dallas, Texas area. Guests have included actors, directors, and producers from classic and upcoming horror films. Texas Fear Fest is presented in conjunction with horror websites Pit of Horror.com and Dread Central.com.

Oxford University Press Releases Original Sweeney Todd

Posted by Horror Grinder on December 29, 2007

Not something we would probably normally cover, but their PR called us “one of the premier Horror sites on the internet,” they really know how to butter a guy up. However some of you may be interested in knowing that Oxford University Press has recently published the original tale of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

“First published under the title The String of Pearls, the story of Sweeney Todd has been endlessly retold in almost every form imaginable. It was from a stage play derived from this original work that Stephen Sondheim was inspired to create the musical version of the Sweeney Todd legend, and from that musical Tim Burton was inspired to bring Sweeney Todd to the big screen. Timed to coincide with the release of this stunning film, Oxford’s complete edition of the SWEENEY TODD story allows modern readers to savor the spine-tingling original in all its gruesome glory. Also included is a fascinating introduction touching on the origins of the tale, the growth of the legend, a history of its many retellings, explanatory notes, and a full chronology of the many versions of Sweeney Todd.”

Automaton Transfusion on DVD

Posted by Horror Grinder on December 29, 2007

This is the little zombie flick that could, and it should of made part 3 of our Year in Review: The Best Alternative, Overlooked and Unappreciated Horror Films of 2007, but unfortunately I was only able to see it in pieces at San Francisco’s Another Hole in the Head film festival, and what I saw looked good. It has also managed to receive a lot of buzz from the horror community.

Hopefully there is a copy on its way to me from the Weinsteins Dimension Extreme label, but if not we can all catch it on March 4th when it hits DVD.

Synopsis from the film’s My Space:

In the early 1970s when everyone in America was worrying about what was going on in Vietnam, the United States Army was secretly developing a way to reanimate the dead. The hope was to have the dead fight instead of the living, but the experiments were shut down when the reanimated corpses were unable to control their hunger for human flesh.

Thirty years later the army has decided to reopen the project. Grover City, because of its remote location, would be the home of their main testing facilities. Without warning the experiments go horribly wrong in Grover City and the DEAD are now on the rampage, eating everyone in sight.

With the town overtaken by Zombies, a group of High School seniors take it upon themselves to fight back and find a cure for this deadly disease.

Automaton Transfusion is a non-stop adventure of four friends battling there way through swamps, forests, blood, and ZOMBIES to survive!

The Cellar Door Review, Written by Meh

Posted by Horror Grinder on December 28, 2007

I had a chance to check out a screener copy of The Cellar Door over the christmas holidays and have to say I was quite impressed. Yet another indie horror film that is sure to please the fans of throw back horror. You will recall I just watched HATCHET finally and felt it was also a throw back to Evil Dead and other gorey classics. Well The…

The Monster Squad Review, Written by Zomboy

Posted by Horror Grinder on December 28, 2007

Some 80′s kids movies suck ass. Some 80′s kids movies kick ass. Thankfully, “The Monster Squad” is the latter of the two.
Following two years in the wake of The Goonies, I can see how this was seen as a ripoff, and completely overlooked. It has been lacking a DVD release, and has only in the last year gotten one, in response to the largely growing cult fan base.
