Heads You Die … Tails I Kill You!

Posted by Horror Grinder on January 31, 2008

Horror Roundtable newcomer Matt Maxwell is releasing his first original graphic novel, entitled Strangeways: Murder Moon. It’s 144 pages of Werewolves in the Old West, and you can preview the first chapter right here, if only to verify that the illustration accompanying this post has nothing to with Maxwell’s comic. I’ll take any […]

Ichi The Killer (2001) Review, Written by jackalqueen

Like ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, I spent most of this film feeling like I must be missing the whole point since everyone raves on about how good it is.  I thought it was ok at best, and it reminded me of Hostel in that it took what could have been a 30 minute story and thought if it threw enough blood and guts around, it would distract you from the fact there was no real story going on. …

The Invasion (2007) Review, Written by jackalqueen

As if all the current remakes weren’t bad enough, they have now started remaking the remakes.  This is the weakest yet, Nicole Kidman as the angst-ridden mother is nothing we haven’t seen before and Daniel Craig might as well have stayed at home for the amount of screen time he gets.
The conveniently wrapped up ending was taken right from War of the Worlds and is yet another sign…

I Am Legend (2007) Review, Written by jackalqueen

Posted by Horror Grinder on January 31, 2008

What a waste of a good idea!  If they’d gone for moody and sinister this could have been a decent horror film but instead they had to fill it with the usual Will Smith one-liners which spoiled any chance of atmosphere and the ending seemed totally rushed and is the weakest part of the whole film. The basic story is that a cure for cancer has mutated into a virus which has wiped out…

Skinwalkers (2007) Review, Written by jackalqueen

Posted by Horror Grinder on January 31, 2008

I think maybe even 1 star might be over-generous.  The story is implausible, even for a werewolf film, the majority of the acting is very fake and the young boy is so annoying that part of you would be happy to see him caught and killed off.
The werewolf make-up is probably the worst I have ever seen.  They should have followed the example of ‘Dog Soldiers’ and…

Deathproof (2007) Review, Written by jackalqueen

Posted by Horror Grinder on January 31, 2008

Disappointing!!  Having watched Planet Terror first (and been pleasantly surprised!), I hoped this would be more of the same but this didn’t live up to it. It’s filmed with the same 70’s B-movie style but, with the use of mobile phones etc, it’s more obviously set in present day so the retro style seemed totally pointless and, for me, pretty annoying this time around.
The story is…

The Mist (2007) Review, Written by jackalqueen

Posted by Horror Grinder on January 31, 2008

Yet another disappointment in the ‘horror’ department.  It’s not scary, it’s not even creepy, even for someone like myself who is not fond of creepy crawlies.
The basic plot is that a mist arrives out of nowhere, people are trapped in a supermarket … and that’s about it.  Somewhere along the way it turns into a religious diatribe which is irritating to watch but manages to…

Rise:Blood Hunter (2007) Review, Written by jackalqueen

Posted by Horror Grinder on January 31, 2008

This film is trying desparately to be the new ‘Blade’ but just doesn’t cut it, no pun intended! Lucy Liu plays a journalist who had infiltrated a gang of psuedo-vampires and exposed them in her articles.  The real vampires were a bit peeved at her making a mockery of them so they kidnap her, rape her and turn her into one of them. She then becomes a vampire who is also a vampire hunter…

Cloverfield (2008) Review, Written by jackalqueen

Posted by Horror Grinder on January 31, 2008

This film is barely even worth reviewing.  I have not been as bored during a film in a long time and spent more time looking at my watch than the screen.
The ‘innovative’ camera work is in pure Blair Witch territory and the characters are equally as annoying.   I know it’s pretending to be actual footage but the acting is never convincing and the dialogue, such as it is,…

The Cradle (2007) Review, Written by jackalqueen

Posted by Horror Grinder on January 31, 2008

This film ‘borrows’, shall we say, quite heavily from many other films so feels like a mess of cliches - starting with the author with writer’s block, moving to a creepy old house in the middle of nowhere so he’ll have peace to write, to the mother who can’t seem to bond with her baby, the reclusive, crazy neighbour (who he obviously asks to babysit, as you would!), the strange noises on the…
