#SDCC16: Alterna Announces Third Edition of The Chair

Posted by Debi Moore on July 22, 2016

Alterna Comics is set to debut the third edition of one of its most popular releases:  The Chair. A flagship title of the company, The Chair was created, written, inked, and lettered by Alterna founder/publisher Peter Simeti with pencils by Kevin Christensen.

Witnessing savage killings at the hands of the prison’s sadistic Warden and his cruel guards, an innocent man must match their brutality and confront his own horrifying past if he hopes to survive. Described as a psychological horror thriller that takes place on death row, the graphic novel has recently spawned a film adaptation.

Simeti states, “I think there’s a central theme to THE CHAIR that really resonates with people. Sure, it’s a psychological thriller with horror overtones, but at its heart it’s a story about the powerful versus the powerless. Even when the story seems to take one twist and turn after the other, that theme is always present.”

This latest edition of The Chair is available for pre-order exclusively through the book market via IPG ($17.99, BW, 232 pages) and is set to debut in stores this September, just in time for the Halloween season. There are currently no official plans to solicit the book through Diamond’s PREVIEWS catalog, however.

“We’ve solicited and re-solicited various editions of THE CHAIR through PREVIEWS over the past few years, so while a part of me would love to solicit the book again for the fourth or fifth time, I feel that it might be a bit of overkill at this point.” Simeti goes on, “With that said, though, if there are comic shops that would love to stock the latest edition, I’m more than happy to be of service and work with them directly. Otherwise, we’ll probably hold off and solicit it once the film is officially released everywhere.”

More information on the upcoming film starring Roddy Piper, Zach Galligan, Noah Hathaway, Naomi Grossman, Tim Muskatell, and Bill Oberst, Jr., can be found at thechairhorror.com.

Alterna Comics Giving Away 30 of its Most Popular Titles Totally Free!

Posted by Kieran Fisher on June 17, 2016

Founded in 2006 by its current president and publisher, Peter Simeti, Alterna Comics has been an unsung cornerstone of independent genre comics ever since.  For the past decade the company has consistently released some excellent titles, most of which explore the realms of horror, science fiction, fantasy, action, and more.

If you’re a fan of the macabre side of entertainment, Alterna Comics has your needs covered – but if you weren’t aware of their work until now, then now is the best time to jump on board, as they’re giving away 30 of their most celebrated titles for FREE!!!  Do you like comics?  Better yet, do you like free comics?  If the answer to these questions is yes, then keep reading.

All you have to do is sign up for their newsletter.  That’s it.  No other conditions.  Having read a number of the titles available already, I can promise you that it’s very much worth your while to make the most of this offer while you still can.  Their vast array of titles ensures that there’s something for all tastes to be found in the Alterna library.  Better yet, the diverse range of their creative output can discovered solely through this offer.

Sound appealing?  Of course it does; it’s not often that a respected publisher with a consistently great track record gives away 30 of its best titles out of the blue.  All you have to do is sign up.

Also, be sure to keep an eye out for The Chair later this year.  It’s Alterna’s first film adaptation, starring the late Roddy Piper (They Live), Zack Galligan (Gremlins), and Bill Oberst, Jr. (Circus of the Dead).

A Sneak Peek of Alterna Comics’ Hoodlum Issue #1

Posted by The Woman In Black on February 26, 2013

A new comic series has arrived, and if you're contemplating checking out Alterna Comics' Hoodlum, which reveals a world where demons rule over humans and only a girl and her robot ape guardian can topple them, we have the Issue #1 cover art and first six pages right here.

From the Press Release:
Alterna Comics has announced that the first issue of its new comic book mini-series HOODLUM will be available on Wednesday, February 27th. In a world where demons have all the power and humans are second-class citizens, only a young girl has the courage to stand up to the city’s ruling class.

"This is a story about rebellion, about standing up for basic human rights, for decency and dignity," says Hilary Goldstein, creator of HOODLUM. "It just also happens to be a book about demons that use magic to fight humans that have pointy sticks."

Riley Brennan steals magic from rich demons and gives it to poor humans. With the help of her mechanized ape-like guardian John and the demon priest Arnillius, Riley will square off against Regent Steig and his demon army with the fate of the human race in the balance. This daring new series in which humans are the boogeymen for demons was created and written by IGN Comics founder Hilary Goldstein with art by John Toledo (Blacklight, Grimm Fairy Tales).

Alterna publisher Peter Simeti has been expanding their digital lineup at an ever-increasing pace and believes that HOODLUM is one of 2013's key releases: "I'm very excited about adding HOODLUM to the Alterna digital catalog. It's got fantastic artwork and a great story that puts a futuristic and supernatural spin on an old tale. I really believe that it has an opportunity to be a runaway success at Alterna."

Future publication dates are as follows:
Issue #2 - April
Issue #3 - June
Collection - July (possibly August) -- collects all three issues plus two bonus back-up stories

You'll find Hoodlum #1 on Comixology and other digital storefronts for $1.99. For more information visit the Hoodlum website, and join the Hoodlum Army on Facebook.
