EFM 2016: Angelica Gets the Spotlight

Posted by Steve Barton on February 2, 2016

More distribution news is coming out of this year’s European Film Market as the Gothic flick Angelica has scored itself a home. Read on for details.

From the Press Release:
Spotlight Pictures has acquired worldwide sales rights for the Gothic drama ANGELICA. Written and directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein (Teeth), the film stars Jena Malone (The Hunger Games, Contact), two-time Academy Award nominee Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs, Tumbleweeds), and Ed Stoppard (The Pianist). Produced by Joyce Pierpoline (Teeth), the film is based on the novel by Arthur Phillips with the same name. ANGELICA first premiered as an official selection at last year’s Berlin Film Festival and will be showing this month at the European Film Market (EFM) on Sunday, February 14th, at 6:30pm at CinemaxX. Spotlight Pictures’ CEO Matt McCombs made the announcement today.

“We are excited beyond words to work with Mitchell and Joyce on this compelling and superbly crafted motion picture,” said McCombs. “We are confident that distributors worldwide will connect with the unique vision that Mitchell has created.”

“I’m psyched to be putting ANGELICA into the capable hands of the folks at Spotlight Pictures,” said Lichtenstein. “They will be effective, enthusiastic custodians of our beautiful and intensely emotional film, bringing it to a wide and diverse audience.”

ANGELICA is a Gothic tale of a newly married couple living in Victorian London who endure a series of increasingly alarming psychological and supernatural effects following the birth of their child.

Aside from its talented cast, a team of seasoned artists collaborated on the movie, including two-time Academy Award® nominee cinematographer Dick Pope (for Mr. Turner and The Illusionist), Academy Award® nominee costume designer Rita Ryack (Casino, Apollo 13), and Academy Award® winning production designer Luciana Arrighi (Howard’s End). Two-time César winner Zbigniew Preisner also composed the haunting score.

Spotlight Pictures Head of Acquisitions Carlos Rincon and producer Joyce Pierpoline negotiated the deal.

Jena Malone Haunted by Angelica

Posted by Uncle Creepy on February 28, 2013

Jena Malone Haunted by AngelicaA new Victorian ghost story is on the way, and honestly, we're pretty happy because we just don't get enough of them. Read on for the very first bits of info on the haunting new tale of Angelica.

According to Deadline, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire's Jena Malone is stepping into the lead to tangle with seductive specters in Victorian England. Mitchell Lichtenstein (Teeth, Happy Tears) is directing Angelica, a psychological thriller set in 1880s London based on the novel of the same name by bestselling author Arthur Phillips (Prague, The Egyptologist).

Malone will play Constance, a young shop girl who falls for and marries Dr. Joseph Barton. After the difficult childbirth of their daughter, Angelica, Malone's character's doctor-ordered celibacy creates a rift in the Bartons’ marriage, and a ghostly force enters their home. Joyce Pierpoline is producing for Pierpoline Films along with Richard Lormand.

Phillips’ 2007 novel Angelica unfolded its sexually-charged supernatural mystery from multiple perspectives.
