Syfy Developing Dan Simmons’ Hyperion as New Event Series

Posted by Debi Moore on June 10, 2015

Syfy has a new event series on the way entitled “Hyperion,” and while it’s a bit more sci-fi than horror, due to the parties involved and the fact that it’s set on the eve of Armageddon (who doesn’t like the sound of that?), we thought we’d pass on the preliminary info.

From the Press Release:
Syfy announced today it is teaming with Oscar-nominated producer Bradley Cooper (American Sniper), Oscar-winning producer Graham King (The Departed, Argo), and Todd Phillips (The Hangover, Old School) to develop Dan Simmons’ Hugo Award-winning best-selling novel Hyperion as an event series.

Cooper will executive produce along with King and Phillips. Itamar Moses (“Boardwalk Empire”) will write the screenplay and serve as co-executive producer. Universal Cable Productions will serve as the studio. “Hyperion” will be a production of Graham King’s GK Films and Bradley Cooper and Todd Phillips’ 22nd and Green.

Set on the eve of Armageddon with the entire galaxy at war, “Hyperion” is the story of seven pilgrims who set forth on a voyage to seek the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives.

“It is an absolute honor to enter into the world created by Dan Simmons that is arguably one of the greatest works of science fiction and help realize it for television audiences,” said executive producer Cooper.

Said Dave Howe, President, Syfy & Chiller: “As Syfy continues to forge important partnerships with award-winning talent on and off screen, this powerhouse team led by Bradley Cooper, Graham King, and Todd Phillips brings an extraordinary track record in producing entertainment of the highest creative ambition. Epitomizing the gold standard of science fiction story-telling, Hyperion tackles smart and provocative themes that help define Syfy’s development vision.”

“Hyperion is a science fiction masterpiece. Dan Simmons’ universe is unique and darkly compelling, and the creative team assembled here is simply as good as it gets,” said Jeff Wachtel, President & Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.

The synopsis of the book, first published in 1989, is as follows:

On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike.  There are those who worship it.  There are those who fear it.  And there are those who have vowed to destroy it.  In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.  On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to Hyperion seeking the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives.  Each carries a desperate hope–and a terrible secret.  And one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands.

Posted by Uncle Creepy on February 13, 2013

AMC is no doubt enjoying the record-breaking ratings that "The Walking Dead" is giving them. That's why it comes as no surprise the network would want to lock down some more tales of horror. Enter an adaptation of the novel The Terror.

According to Deadline, AMC has put in development "The Terror," a drama series adaptation of the 2007 bestselling novel by Dan Simmons, which is being executive produced by Scott Free TV, Television 360, and feature producer Alexandra Milchan.

Written by hot feature writer David Kajganich, "The Terror" is set in 1847, when the crew of a Royal Naval expedition to find the Arctic’s treacherous Northwest Passage discovers instead a monstrous predator – a cunning and vicious Gothic horror that stalks the ships in a desperate game of survival, the consequences of which could endanger the region and its native people forever. Kajganich executive produces with Scott Free’s David Zucker and Ridley Scott, TV 360′s Scott Lambert, and Meghan Lyvers, Milchan, and Simmons.
