The Owlman Returns in Gothic Noir – The Black Gloves

Posted by Kieran Fisher on April 25, 2017

In 2013, Scotland’s Hex Media unleashed a new 21st century horror icon with their Owlman creature in gothic chiller, Lord of Tears.  Inspired by a myriad of world folklore, the creature terrified audiences as the film garnered acclaim and put the company’s name on the map.  However, in addition to being a scary bugger, the Owlman is quite the hoot.  Shortly after Lord of Tears, he became a viral sensation after a series of online prank videos where he sprung out on unsuspecting punters on the street.  See it for yourself below.

Whether it’s scaring horror fans in indie horror gems or giving them a good laugh on his days off, the Owlman is always worth celebrating – and now he’s back.  The Black Gloves will see the feathery fearmongerer return to our screens later this year for some good old-fashioned scare fare, and from the looks of this trailer, it would seem that it’s going to be another impressive outing for Scotland’s burgeoning fright masters at Hex Media.

From the Press Release:
Director Lawrie Brewster and writer Sarah Daly are back with Gothic noir The Black Gloves, a 1940s-set chiller featuring the Owlman, the iconic villain and viral sensation from their acclaimed debut feature Lord of Tears.
The Black Gloves tells the story of a psychologist obsessed with the disappearance of his young patient, and the menacing owl-headed figure that plagued her nightmares. His investigations lead him to a reclusive ballerina who, just like his patient, is convinced that she is about to die at the hands of this disturbing entity.
In the bleak Scottish highlands, Finn counsels his new patient, under the watchful eye of her sinister ballet teacher. He soon finds himself entangled in a ballet of paranoia, dark agendas and a maze of deadly twists and turns, as the legend of the Owlman becomes a terrifying reality.

The film stars Spanish horror icon Macarena Gomez, best known for her role as the iconic sea priestess in Stuart Gordon’s Dagon and her recent powerhouse performance inMusarañas (Shrew’s Nest). Also starring are genre legend Nicholas Vince (Hellraiser, Nightbreed) and Jamie Scott-Gordon, who won much praise for his performance in Brewster’s gritty folk horror The Unkindness of Ravens. Alexandra Nicole Hulme (Girls, Smash, Glee), an acclaimed dancer and choreographer, who also appeared in Lord of Tears, stars as the troubled ballerina

The film continues the trend for black and white horror alongside recent titles such as A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, The Eyes of My Mother and A Field in England, but for inspiration for the film, and its style, Brewster and Daly looked to cinema history.

According to Daly “I’ve always been a huge fan of Gothic romantic horror films and literature, and for The Black Gloves, we looked to films like Hitchcock’s Rebecca, The Innocents and Cat People for our visual style and mood. The noir look seemed a natural fit for The Owlman, who is this shadowy entity, always lurking in dark corners, watching.”

Hex Media, the fiercely independent Scottish horror house behind Lord of Tears, The Unkindness of Ravens and The Black Gloves, is the passion project of Brewster and Daly, who have been quietly blazing a trail in the genre since the company’s inception five years ago.

Brewster tell us: “We’re passionate about telling original stories and maintaining our independence to do so. We’ve focused heavily on building our connection with our audience, and working with them to create the kind of films we want to make, and that they want to see. The support of our fans allows us to tell these strange, dark stories that the mainstream isn’t willing to take a risk on.”

The film is a co-production between Hex Media and long-time partners Dark Dunes Productions in association with 3rd Monkey Entertainment and Lights Out Productions, and is set for release in Autumn 2017.

To support the film, head on over to the Kickstarter page and check out the various perks, which include films, t-shirts, action figures, posters and more.

New Director’s Cut Edition of Lord of Tears is Available to Watch for Free for a Limited Time Only

Posted by Kieran Fisher on April 19, 2017

Along with many other horror outlets, we’ve been championing Scotland’s Hex Media for quite some time now.  The production company, founded by creative duo Lawrie Brewster and Sarah Daly, has been responsible for some of the most interesting genre cinema to emerge from any region in recent years – and we can’t get enough of it.  With acclaimed powerhouse efforts, Lord of Tears (2013) and The Unkindness of Ravens (2016), having garnered heaps of critical acclaim, they’ve become a force to be reckoned with and the future is looking bright (despite the gloomy nature of their film’s and their homeland).  It’s a good time to be alive.

But even though giving fans quality scare fare is good enough for us, the fine folks at Hex are also giving it to us for FREE!  That’s right – for a limited time only you can watch the brand new director’s cut edition of Lord of Tears without having to pay a shilling.  Of course, you should still pick up a copy of the DVD/Blu-ray set as Hex’s releases are a collector’s dream, but if you want to see what they’re all about first then this is your chance.

You owe it to yourself to check this movie out.  If you need more convincing, then you can read our review. here.

From the Press Release:

The good people at Scotland’s horror house Hex Media must be feeling generous, because for a limited time only, they’re making the brand new Special Edition of their award-winning chiller Lord of Tears available to watch and download for free!

Lord of Tears
tells the story of James Findlay, a school teacher tortured by childhood memories of a strange and unsettling entity – a long-limbed figure in a Victorian tail suit… with the head of an owl.

As James faces a descent into madness, his only hope to fight his tormentor and banish the evil that haunts him, is to return to his childhood home. He travels to the lonely mansion in the Scottish Highlands, a place notorious for its tragic and disturbing history. There, he must uncover, once and for all, the chilling truth behind the immortal stalker.

On its original release in 2013,
Lord of Tears quickly earned cult classic status, with fans and critics alike enjoying the film’s creeping dread, as well as the complex twists and turns of the story. The film won the audience award at the Bram Stoker International Film Festival and screened at Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, Belfast Film Festival and many more.

Director Lawrie Brewster has just released a brand new Special Edition of the film, boasting a complete re-edit and brand new sound design.

According to Lawrie, “
We’ve produced a couple more films now since the original Lord of Tears, and we wanted to apply the lessons we’ve learned to our debut feature. I felt that Lord of Tears deserved a revisit, and I believe that with this new Special Edition, we’ve created the best possible version of the film. Now we’re just eager to share it with fans of the genre.”

Owlman Action Figure Available to The Unkindness of Ravens Kickstarter Backers

Posted by David Gelmini on December 4, 2015

With the much anticipated The Unkindness of Ravens now reaching the end of its Kickstarter campaign, the filmmakers have unveiled an awesome limited edition action figure of Owlman, the villain from director Lawrie Brewster’s previous film, Lord of Tears.

Limited to just 150 copies, it can only be obtained by contributing towards the Kickstater, so head on there now before it’s too late. The design of the figure brings back memories of all those beloved Star Wars toys from Kenner, and if you need any more convincing of how terrifying Owlman can be, then have a look at him in action below.

From the Press Release:
Lord of Tears creators release Limited Edition Owlman action figure! Wreak your own tiny reign of terror with retro Owlman action figure!

The Owlman has become something of an internet cult figure over the last couple of years, with his epic reign of terror on unsuspecting Scottish explorers going seriously viral. The character of the Owlman originally appeared in the indie horror film Lord of Tears back in 2013, directed by Lawrie Brewster. The film itself was well received by fans and critics alike, but the Owlman’s popularity has grown way beyond his indie roots into the realm of internet folklore. Like his earlier counterpart and some would say distant cousin, Slenderman, the Owlman has captured the imagination of the horror community, spawning new stories, fan theories, costumes and even tattoos!

Now, you can possess your very own Owlman in the form of a Limited Edition action figure being sold through Kickstarter. Limited to just 150 exclusive signed figures, the release will help fund the completion of the team’s next film, The Unkindness of Ravens. This next venture from Lord of Tears director Lawrie Brewster and writer Sarah Daly promises new beaked horrors in the form of the plague-doctoresque Raven Warriors. You can pre-order the movie as well as the new 3-Disc Edition of Lord of Tears over on Kickstarter – but hurry – there’s just a few days left in the campaign, so get ’em while they’re hot!

If you’re still not convinced, check out this awesome, retro commercial they produced for their Owlman figure and just try to pretend you don’t want one!
